Overview
This is a beautifully expressive earthenware figure of a Bactrian camel, modeled in the classic style of Chinese Tang Dynasty tomb pottery. It features the famous 'sancai' (three-color) lead-based glaze technique, showing off rich amber, green, and cream tones running down its molded body.
Story
Caravans of Bactrian camels were the heavy-lifters of the ancient Silk Road, carrying precious silks, spices, and glass across treacherous deserts. In the Tang Dynasty, wealthy citizens buried clay models of these beasts in their tombs to ensure continued wealth in the afterlife. This 20th-century tribute captures that ancient spirit of adventure and status.
Maker / Origin
While the original Tang masterpieces were created by imperial workshops for elite burials, this piece is a high-quality 20th-century revival. During the late Qing dynasty and throughout the 1900s, Chinese ceramicists rediscovered these ancient techniques, creating highly skilled replicas to satisfy the global fascination with Silk Road history.
Condition & Value
The figurine appears to be in very good condition with no obvious major chips, cracks, or restorations visible in the photos. There is typical minor wear to the unglazed base and some expected glaze crazing, which is normal for low-fired earthenware.
