Overview
A beautifully potted cylindrical porcelain brush pot (bitong) decorated in the delicate fencai (famille rose) palette. It features a continuous, masterfully painted ink-and-wash style landscape depicting a scholar's retreat nestled among towering, craggy mountains, misty waters, and a solitary fisherman in a sampan.
Story
Centuries of scholarly tradition are captured on this porcelain vessel. Designed for the writing table of a Chinese literatus, it held the very brushes used to paint the same misty mountain vistas wrapped around its exterior.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned on the exterior, this piece was crafted in Jingdezhen, the historic porcelain capital of China. During the late Qing and Republic periods, master decorators transitioned from rigid imperial patterns to expressive, painterly styles inspired by classical scroll paintings.
Condition & Value
The porcelain body appears to be in excellent condition with no visible cracks, chips, or major enamel loss. There is some minor surface grime and wear along the inner rim consistent with age. The original wooden box shows typical aging but has preserved the piece beautifully.
