Overview
An extraordinary, highly expressive Japanese okimono-style netsuke depicting the mythical long-armed creature Tenaga (手長) seated cross-legged and reaching high into the heavens. Carved from rare narwhal tusk (known historically in Japan as 'unikoru'), the figure holds a freshly caught fish aloft, showcasing a delightful blend of folklore, humor, and superb miniature craftsmanship.
Story
During the Edo period, Dutch traders brought narwhal tusks to Japan under the guise of mythical 'unicorn' horns. Japanese carvers quickly realized this dense, beautifully grained material was perfect for bringing legendary creatures to life.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned, this piece is the work of a highly skilled master carver (netsukeshi) active during the 19th century. These artisans specialized in transforming folklore into tactile, pocket-sized sculptures, utilizing the natural curvature of exotic materials to dictate the dynamic poses of their subjects.
Condition & Value
The carving is in excellent antique condition with a rich, warm patina. There is minor surface wear and natural age lines consistent with age, but no major chips, cracks, or restorations are visible. The accompanying custom wood stand is well-preserved.
