Overview
This is an iconic mid-century modern enamel-on-steel covered casserole dish featuring the legendary 'Lotus' pattern in a vibrant avocado green and white. Designed in Norway, this piece represents the pinnacle of Scandinavian cooperative design, blending industrial utility with cheerful, organic aesthetics. It is a highly collectible kitchenware classic that defined the look of the 1960s home.
Story
In 1962, a Norwegian ironworks factory transformed everyday cooking. By fusing industrial steel with a simple, stylized leaf pattern, they created a global design sensation that brought bright, cheerful art directly onto the family dinner table.
Maker / Origin
Originally an ironworks founded in 1907, Cathrineholm transitioned to enamelware in the mid-20th century under the artistic direction of pioneer Grete Prytz Kittelsen. While Kittelsen designed the sleek, functional metal vessels, the famous 'Lotus' pattern itself was actually created by decorative artist Arne Clausen.
Condition & Value
The exterior enamel and white lotus graphics appear bright and glossy with minimal wear. The interior white enamel is clean with only minor light scratching from gentle use. There is very minor, typical wear along the black rim edge where the lid rests, which is highly common for vintage enamelware of this age.
