Overview
A heavy-duty, industrial 5-gallon steel shipping can featuring Sinclair's signature green paint and embossed branding. This rugged container represents the early era of bulk automotive oil distribution before disposable quart cans dominated the market.
Story
In 1916, Harry Sinclair merged eleven small oil companies to create an empire. This heavy steel can was built to survive rough journeys on early American roads, delivering bulk oil directly to rural farms and local service stations.
Maker / Origin
The Sinclair Refining Company, famous for its green dinosaur mascot introduced in 1930, was a giant of American industry. The can itself was fabricated by the American Can Company ('Canco'), the premier industrial lithographer and metal container manufacturer of the 20th century.
Condition & Value
The can shows heavy wear consistent with industrial use, including significant surface rust, paint loss, and minor denting. The original green paint is still visible on about 50% of the surface, and the cast handles remain structurally sound.
