Overview
An exceptionally vibrant, large porcelain charger decorated in the classic Ao-Kutani (green Kutani) palette. The interior features a mesmerizing, dense pattern of swirling green waves populated by golden Buddhist lions (shishi), precious flaming jewels, and red coral branches, while the reverse is painted in underglaze blue with a spurious Chinese Ming Dynasty Chenghua mark.
Story
Crafted in late 19th-century Japan, this charger features golden shishi lions leaping through a sea of green waves. The mark on the back claims it was made in Ming Dynasty China, a common tribute to historic ceramic masters.
Maker / Origin
The Kutani kilns of Ishikawa Prefecture are legendary for their bold, colorful glazes. Revived in the 19th century after a long period of dormancy, Kutani potters specialized in rich, deep enamels that covered nearly the entire surface of the porcelain, creating some of the most visually striking ceramics in Japanese history.
Condition & Value
The charger shows minor wear to the overglaze gilding on the interior and some typical firing imperfections on the reverse. There is light surface scratching consistent with age, but no visible cracks or major chips. Excellent preservation of the green enamel glaze.
