Overview
An authentic Zhangzhou ware (historically known in the West as Swatow ware) underglaze blue porcelain Charger, complete with a fitted Japanese wooden storage box (tomobako). The central well features dynamic freehand painting of chrysanthemums and bamboo, surrounded by a diaper-pattern and medallion border.
Story
During the late Ming dynasty, provincial private kilns in Zhangzhou produced bold, spontaneous ceramics that imperial kilns never could. Shipped across trade routes to Japan, Japanese tea masters cherished these rustic 'Gosu' wares for their soulful, unpretentious beauty.
Maker / Origin
The Zhangzhou kilns comprised dozens of private provincial potteries operating in Fujian province during the 16th and 17th centuries. Unshackled by rigid imperial standards, local artisans painted with incredible speed, expressive brushwork, and energetic freedom.
Condition & Value
Appears well-preserved with vibrant underglaze cobalt pigment and glaze shine. Minor glaze pinholes, firing flaws, and slight rim rough spots are typical for this ware and do not harm value; any structural cracks or chips would reduce value.
