Overview
An exquisitely painted Chinese porcelain bowl decorated in the Famille Rose palette, depicting elegant court ladies (meiren) engaged in leisurely scholarly pursuits. The exterior features finely detailed scenes of ladies playing weiqi (go), painting, and appreciating nature, rendered with delicate brushwork and a soft, pastel color scheme.
Story
Created during a period of intense nostalgia, this bowl looks back to the golden age of the Yongzheng reign. The scenes of elegant court ladies in garden settings served as a peaceful, idealized escape from the rapid modernization of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Maker / Origin
While bearing an apocryphal six-character Yongzheng mark on the base, this bowl was crafted by highly skilled, unnamed artisans in Jingdezhen, the porcelain capital of China. During the late Qing and Republic periods, private studios specialized in recreating the refined, imperial styles of the 18th century to meet the demands of sophisticated domestic and international collectors.
Condition & Value
The bowl appears to be in very good condition with vibrant enamels and minimal wear to the gilt rim. There are no obvious cracks, hairline fractures, or chips visible in the photos, though a physical inspection under UV light is recommended to confirm the absence of restoration.
