Overview
This is a heavy-duty, vintage Soviet-era cast aluminum oval roaster, traditionally known as a 'gusyatnitsa' (goose roaster) or 'utyatnitsa' (duck roaster). It features integrated handles, a ribbed heat-diffusing base, and the distinctive VSMPO manufacturer's mark on the underside.
Story
Manufactured in the closed military-industrial city of Verkhnyaya Salda, this roaster was made by the same state enterprise that forged titanium components for Soviet aerospace projects. It brought industrial-grade metallurgy directly into the domestic kitchens of the USSR.
Maker / Origin
The maker's mark belongs to VSMPO (Verkhnyaya Salda Metallurgical Production Association), located in the Sverdlovsk region of the Ural Mountains. Founded in 1933, VSMPO became the world's largest producer of titanium, famously supplying global aerospace giants while simultaneously producing consumer goods like kitchenware under Soviet state directives.
Condition & Value
The roaster shows heavy signs of use, with significant carbon buildup, grease staining, and surface oxidation on the exterior and ribbed base. The interior shows typical pitting and wear consistent with decades of cooking, but it remains structurally sound with no cracks.
