Overview

A whimsical ceramic double bud vase featuring two anthropomorphic frogs in a vibrant teal glaze perched atop a bright yellow log.

Story

Post-World War II households were hungry for color and humor, leading to a massive boom in 'novelty' ceramics that broke away from the formal, stiff styles of the past.

Maker / Origin

If produced in Japan, it represents the incredible skill of post-war ceramicists who could mass-produce charm with hand-painted details for the export market.

Condition & Value

Visible crazing is present throughout the yellow glaze, which is expected and often preferred by collectors as proof of age. There is a glaze drip on the back of the right-hand frog which is a manufacturing artifact rather than damage. Condition appears good with no obvious structural chips.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
