Overview
An iconic masterpiece of the Shin-hanga (New Prints) movement by Kawase Hasui depicting a lone figure ascending snowy stairs toward the vivid vermilion Kiyomizu Hall in Ueno, Tokyo. The contrast of brilliant crimson architecture against falling snow and the vibrant blue umbrella makes this one of Hasui's most celebrated winter compositions.
Story
Published in July 1929, Hasui captured Tokyo's peaceful historic corners during an era of rapid modernization. His snow scenes became world-famous, even captivating Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who passionately collected his work.
Maker / Origin
Kawase Hasui (1883–1957) was a titan of Japanese Shin-hanga landscape art, designated a Japanese Living National Treasure shortly before his death. Working with master publisher Watanabe Shozaburo, he revitalized traditional ukiyo-e methods with Western realism, atmospheric light, and rich romanticism.
Condition & Value
The print displays vibrant, well-saturated colors and clean bleed-through on the reverse washi paper. Margins are untrimmed with faint pencil notations along the lower margin and minor edge toning. Excellent preservation will command strong collector interest.
