Overview
This is an early Sawyer's View-Master Model B stereoscopic viewer in molded black Bakelite, complete with its original marbled storage case and an assortment of vintage 3D reels. The Model B is distinguished by its clam-shell opening design and round lens hoods before View-Master introduced the push-down advance lever in later models.
Story
Invented by William Gruber in 1938 and debuted at the 1939 New York World's Fair, View-Master was originally marketed to adults for scenic travel, not children. During WWII, the US military purchased 100,000 units for aircraft identification.
Maker / Origin
Sawyer's Inc. began in Portland, Oregon, producing scenic photographic postcards before partnering with German-born organ maker and photographer William Gruber. Together, they revolutionized 3D Kodachrome photography, turning Sawyer's into an international household name long before selling to GAF in 1966.
Condition & Value
The viewer appears intact with light surface wear, while the storage case shows significant staining, adhesive tape residue, and possible lid damage; reel envelopes show creasing and edge wear. The tape and wear to the case reduce the total set value by roughly 25%.
