This is a decorative ceramic miniature plate featuring an applied Japanese Chokin metalwork plaque depicting calla lilies and a butterfly. Chokin is the traditional art of engraving copper and gilding it with precious metals like pure silver and 24K gold, framed here in a lustrous 24K gold-plated ceramic rim.
Story
Centuries ago, master metalworkers used Chokin engraving to decorate the armor and katana of samurai warriors. By the late 20th century, Japanese artisans adapted this ancient technique into elegant decorative keepsakes.
Maker / Origin
The metal face bears the engraved signature '洲峰刀' (Shūhō tō / carved by Shūhō), a master metal-engraver active in mid-to-late 20th-century Japanese Chokin studios. These workshops produced exquisite giftware and collector plates that bridged historic sword-smithing traditions with modern home decor.
Condition & Value
Very good vintage condition overall. The central engraved Chokin medallion is bright and clear; there is minor surface wear and light scuffing on the gilded ceramic rim consistent with age and handling. Minor rim wear slightly softens collector premium.
