Overview
An original, framed paper advertising label for Ruhstaller's Gilt Edge Lager Beer, featuring bold red and gold typography. This rare piece of West Coast breweriana represents one of California's most prominent pre-Prohibition breweries, founded by Swiss immigrant Frank Ruhstaller.
Story
In 1881, Swiss immigrant Frank Ruhstaller took over Sacramento's historic City Brewery, turning it into a regional empire. This label survived the devastating blow of Prohibition in 1920, which forced the brewery to close its doors forever.
Maker / Origin
Frank Ruhstaller was a pioneer of California's early brewing industry, arriving in Sacramento during the post-Gold Rush boom. His brewery became famous for using local Sacramento Valley hops, helping to establish the region as a global hop-growing powerhouse in the late 19th century.
Condition & Value
The label appears to be in good vintage condition with some expected age-toning and minor fading. It has been framed to preserve it, but it is unclear if archival-safe materials were used or if the label has been permanently adhered to a backing board, which would slightly reduce its value.
