Overview

Original printed corrugated packaging box for an early Giro Air Attack SC cycling helmet. Featuring Giro's bold iconic 1980s logo and bullet points highlighting Snell B-90 safety certification and internal 'Roll Cage' technology.

Story

In 1985, Jim Gentes founded Giro in Santa Cruz, fundamentally revolutionizing cycling safety by introducing lightweight, highly ventilated expanded polystyrene helmets. The Air Attack model became a signature staple of late 1980s and early 1990s road cycling and triathlon culture.

Maker / Origin

Jim Gentes, a former bike racer and industrial designer, launched Giro Sport Design out of a garage. By modernizing helmet aerodynamics and weight, Giro quickly became the dominant helmet choice for Tour de France competitors and casual riders alike.

Condition & Value

The cardboard box exhibits light age toning, minor edge crushing, and packing tape applied over the printed graphics. Intact graphics with tape pull risks slightly decrease value for box-only collectors.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues

Best Venue

Specialty auction or a focused dealer with buyers already in this lane.
