Overview

This is a vintage commemorative ceramic plate produced on Homer Laughlin's popular 'Eggshell Theme' mold line, featuring an embossed scroll-and-fruit border. The central black transfer illustration depicts Delaware's historic Cape Henlopen Light, with script reading 'Erected 1765 - Fell 1926'.

Story

Built in 1765, Cape Henlopen Light guided ships for over 160 years before ocean erosion undermined the sand dune, causing the tower to collapse into the sea in 1926. Made in 1949, this plate commemorates the lost landmark.

Maker / Origin

The Homer Laughlin China Company, famous for Fiesta ware, introduced its lightweight 'Eggshell' lines in the late 1930s. The 'Theme' shape featured an ornate relief rim, often sold blank to third-party decorating firms like Decorated Ceramics of Cincinnati, Ohio, who applied custom souvenir transfers.

Condition & Value

Appears in very good condition with clean transfer imagery and sharp mold details. Mild age-related glaze wear or faint surface marks on the back, but no obvious chips or cracks visible. Excellent condition helps maintain top value for souvenir ware.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
