Overview
This impressive 35 cm porcelain obachi (large basin) features underglaze cobalt blue (sometsuke) decoration depicting a crane, pine needles, and stylized clouds framed by a scrollwork border. Its thick potting, soft bluish-white glaze, and unglazed foot rim strongly reflect the rustic aesthetic of 17th-century Shoki-Imari wares.
Story
Born in the early 1600s after kaolin was discovered in Arita, early Imari wares broke ground for Japanese porcelain. This crane motif conveyed wishes of longevity and peace in Edo households.
Maker / Origin
Produced by the historic ceramic community of Arita in modern-day Saga Prefecture, where Korean potters introduced climbing kilns and high-fire porcelain techniques under Nabeshima clan patronage.
Condition & Value
Shows fine age-related surface crazing, light kiln iron spots, and minor rim discoloration; owner confirms surface-only crazing, though one visible rim line requires verification to ensure no structural hairline. Stable condition retains good decorative value.
