Overview
This is a classic green glass 'Bocksbeutel'—the traditional, flattened ellipsoidal wine bottle of the Franconia region—encased in an elaborate, hand-forged wrought iron mount. The metalwork features beautifully detailed grape leaves, winding vines, and a cluster of grapes, complete with a collar stamped 'Würzburg' and a stylized carrying handle.
Story
Würzburg has been the beating heart of Franconian wine culture since the 8th century. This bottle, encased in hand-forged iron, was created as a celebratory souvenir of the region's famous Silvaner wines, designed to look like a medieval relic.
Maker / Origin
While the glass bottle itself was produced by a regional German glassworks, the decorative iron mount was hand-crafted by a local German blacksmith or metal workshop specializing in 'Kunstschmiedearbeit' (artistic ironwork) for the thriving turn-of-the-century tourism trade.
Condition & Value
The wrought iron mount is in good antique condition with a rich, dark patina and minor surface oxidation. However, the green glass bottle has a large, severe break at the mouth, with approximately half of the collar and lip missing. This damage reduces the value by roughly 60-70%.
