Overview
An exquisite Japanese Kutani porcelain bowl featuring incredibly dense, miniature red-enamel painting (aka-e) highlighted with brilliant gold leaf (kinran-de). The interior and exterior are decorated with mythical beasts (shinjū) and Daoist sages (senjin) rendered with single-hair brush precision. The base bears the square underglaze blue workshop mark 'Seii-do Sei' (静異堂製).
Story
During the Meiji era, Japanese master painters used brushes made of a single animal hair to create miniature universes. This bowl was designed to dazzle Western collectors at international world's fairs, showcasing Japan's unmatched artistic precision.
Maker / Origin
The Seii-do (静異堂) workshop was an active producer of high-quality Kutani porcelain during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They specialized in the highly demanding 'Aka-e Kinran-de' style, which combined iron-red detailing with lavish gold gilding to create pieces that felt both ancient and incredibly luxurious.
Condition & Value
The bowl appears to be in excellent antique condition with no visible chips, cracks, or hairline fractures. There is minor, expected wear to the gold gilding along the rim, which is typical for a piece of this age. The presence of the original wooden box has kept this piece beautifully preserved.
