Overview

This is a finely worked Chinese silk embroidery panel featuring a central roundel of a scholar and an attendant holding a fan, surrounded by four embroidered auspicious symbols of the scholar's studio.

Story

Woven during the twilight of imperial China, this panel was likely intended as a decorative sleeve band or cushion cover. The reverse side acts as a time capsule, preserving the exact paper patterns and thread tensions left by the embroiderer's hands over a century ago.

Maker / Origin

While the individual embroiderer remains anonymous, they were part of a highly skilled domestic or workshop tradition in late imperial China. Women and specialized artisans in regions like Suzhou and Canton spent lifetimes mastering the precise satin stitches and couching techniques seen here, passing down patterns through generations.

Condition & Value

The front of the embroidery is in remarkably clean, vibrant condition with minimal fading or thread loss. The reverse shows expected wear, including tearing and degradation of the original red and tan paper backing templates, which is entirely normal for a textile of this age and actually adds to its historical interest.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
