Overview
This is a beautifully crafted, fully articulated sterling silver fish, designed to wiggle and flex in the hand just like a living creature. Originally rooted in the tradition of European spice boxes or vinaigrettes, these whimsical silver fish became highly collectible decorative objects and table toys in the mid-20th century.
Story
In Victorian times, ladies carried hollow silver fish filled with perfume-soaked sponges to ward off city odors. By the mid-1900s, silversmiths transformed this concept into delightful, flexible table ornaments meant to spark dinner conversation.
Maker / Origin
While often unmarked or bearing small regional hallmarks, these articulated fish were a specialty of skilled silversmiths in Spain, Portugal, and Mexico. Workshops in these regions mastered the complex art of micro-joinery, producing whimsical silver animals for the export market.
Condition & Value
The fish appears to be in excellent vintage condition with all articulated segments intact and moving freely. The green glass eyes are present and undamaged, and the silver has developed a lovely, soft patina that highlights the engraved scales. Excellent preservation of the delicate joints preserves its maximum value.
