Overview

A traditional accordion-bound Chinese folding landscape album (ce ye) containing multiple ink and light color paintings on paper. Each leaf depicts classical literati themes such as mist-shrouded mountains, scholar huts, winding rivers, and seasonal trees, accompanied by poetic calligraphic inscriptions and artist red seal stamps.

Story

Created during the late Qing period, this album was designed as an intimate art gallery meant to be unfolded slowly on a scholar's desk. Each leaf opens a literal window into ideal solitude and communion with nature, complete with poetic inscriptions.

Maker / Origin

The album reflects the Literati (Wenrenhua) tradition, where scholars painted not for commercial sale, but to express personal philosophy, poetry, and inner spirit. Japanese collectors later avidly imported and bound these Chinese albums under the Nanga (Southern School) appreciation movement, often adding custom storage cases.

Condition & Value

The outer cloth covers show significant age-related wear, fraying, and staining. Internal paper leaves display light foxing, minor toning, and edge wear consistent with 19th-century origin, but the painted images and calligraphy remain clean and legible.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
