Overview
A classic mid-to-late 20th-century marine wildlife sculpture featuring two soaring pelicans in flight. The birds are crafted from John Perry's signature proprietary resin compound and mounted on a natural, highly textured manzanita burlwood base.
Story
In the 1970s, California artist John Perry pioneered a way to capture the fluid motion of coastal wildlife. By mounting lightweight, dynamic sculptures onto rugged, ancient-looking burlwood, he created a beautiful contrast between sea and land.
Maker / Origin
John Perry, a sculptor with a background in biology, established his studio in Southern California in 1973. He became famous for his realistic depictions of marine life, particularly whales, dolphins, and coastal birds, which became staples of coastal American decor.
Condition & Value
The sculpture appears to be in very good vintage condition. The white resin birds show no obvious yellowing, chips, or broken wingtips, and the metal mounting rods are secure. The natural cracks in the manzanita burlwood base are inherent to the wood and do not detract from its value.
