Overview
An exquisite Japanese kakejiku (hanging scroll) depicting a majestic, snow-capped Mount Fuji rising above a sea of clouds, with travelers walking along the Tokaido road below. The painting features a poetic inscription indicating it was painted at the 'Daira-kan' inn by Hashimoto Dokuzan, complete with his artist seal.
Story
In the 1920s, a Zen abbot paused at a historic inn along the Tokaido road, looked out at Mount Fuji, and captured this fleeting moment. Rather than a simple souvenir, this painting represents a spiritual meditation on the eternal mountain rising above the transient, busy lives of the travelers below.
Maker / Origin
Hashimoto Dokuzan (1869–1938) was a highly respected Rinzai Zen Buddhist monk who rose to become the abbot of the famous Shōkoku-ji temple in Kyoto. In the Zen tradition, painting was not merely an aesthetic pursuit but an extension of meditation and spiritual practice.
Condition & Value
The scroll painting appears to be in very good condition with only minor, expected toning to the paper and silk mounting consistent with age. The original wooden storage box shows some wear and age-related darkening but remains structurally sound.
