Vintage Ekahi Village Resort Pool Key and Fob

Overview

This is a wonderfully nostalgic piece of Hawaiian resort history: an original brass pool key attached to a chunky, debossed blue plastic key fob from the Ekahi Village in Wailea. Before digital keycards and smart locks, these heavy, tactile fobs were a staple of the luxury vacation experience, designed to be too large to accidentally pocket.

Story

Built in the late 1970s, Wailea Ekahi was one of Maui's premier low-density luxury developments. This key unlocked a beachfront pool paradise, serving as a physical passport to the golden age of Hawaiian tourism.

Maker / Origin

While the specific manufacturer of the plastic fob is unmarked, these were typically produced by commercial engraving and specialty advertising companies of the era. They were built to withstand the harsh, corrosive environment of salty ocean air and chlorinated pool water.

Condition & Value

The key fob is in very good vintage condition with minor surface scratches and light wear to the white paint fill. The brass key and connecting metal ring show a heavy, authentic dark patina and oxidation consistent with age and exposure to coastal air. This natural wear enhances its vintage appeal.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
