Overview
A pair of iconic Mission style Morris-style reclining armchairs crafted from quartersawn white oak with rich caramel leather upholstery. These chairs feature the classic slatted sides, broad corbeled armrests, and exposed through-tenon joinery that define the Arts & Crafts aesthetic.
Story
William Morris designed the first 'Morris chair' in 1860s England to challenge industrial clutter. Gustav Stickley adapted it in America, creating an honest, structural masterpiece that became the ultimate symbol of cozy, intellectual home life.
Maker / Origin
The Stickley brothers—Gustav, Leopold, and John George—were titans of the American Arts & Crafts movement, championing 'honest' furniture made of native materials. While the original movement faded by WWI, the brand was revived in 1974 by Alfred and Aminy Audi, who meticulously brought these historic, heirloom-quality designs back to production using the original construction techniques.
Condition & Value
The chairs appear to be in excellent, gently used condition. The leather shows minor natural creasing consistent with light use but no major staining, cracking, or tears. The oak frames retain a rich, lustrous finish with minimal scuffing. Excellent preservation like this commands the higher end of the market range.
