Overview

A gold-tone novelty tie bar featuring a miniature sculpted Hopto hydraulic backhoe or excavator. These pieces were commissioned by heavy machinery manufacturers as promotional gifts for salesmen, dealers, and equipment operators during the post-WWII construction boom.

Story

In the 1950s, hydraulic excavators revolutionized building across post-war America. Machinery companies gifted these detailed tie clips to top sales reps and construction bosses to celebrate landmark equipment sales.

Maker / Origin

The 'Hopto' line of hydraulic backhoes was originally developed by the Badger Machine Company of Winona, Minnesota, before being acquired by the machine tool giant Warner & Swasey in 1957. Hopto diggers were pioneering early hydraulic earthmovers that helped build America's interstate highway system and suburban boom.

Condition & Value

Shows moderate surface wear, oxidation, and plating loss consistent with age and frequent wear. The spring clip mechanism appears intact and functional. Vintage heavy machinery promotional tie bars generally sell in the $15 to $45 range depending on brand obscurity and condition.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues

Best Venue

Specialty auction or a focused dealer with buyers already in this lane.
