Overview

An exquisite Japanese black lacquer document box (fubako) decorated in gold maki-e with irises and butterflies. Features gilt-bronze cord fittings (mewuki) and comes complete with its fitted wooden storage box (tomobako) with authentication label.

Story

During Japan's Momoyama period, samurai elite used elongated document boxes like this to deliver formal correspondence and official decrees. The delicate gold iris design symbolized nobility and protection against evil spirits. Every scroll placed inside was treated with utmost reverence and ceremony.

Maker / Origin

Maki-e master artisans served daimyo lords and high-ranking court officials, creating bespoke lacquerware that required months or even years of painstaking labor. The label on the outer box attributes this piece as a 'Momoyama Period Fine Work', reflecting the high status of its original creation or collection history.

Condition & Value

Displays gentle edge wear and minor surface scratches consistent with age. Lacquer retains strong gloss and gold maki-e remains remarkably vibrant. Includes tomobako (fitted wood box) and inner wrapping silk. Good condition preserves value well.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
