Overview
This is a beautiful trio of authentic, hand-coiled Botswana baskets, including one large masterfully woven bowl and two medium companion bowls. One basket retains its original 'Botswanacraft Marketing' tag, identifying the weaver as 'Kakove' from the Okavango Delta region.
Story
Deep in Botswana's Okavango Delta, weavers have spent generations transforming wild mokola palm leaves into watertight vessels. Originally designed for winnowing grain and storing beer, each pattern tells a story of the local landscape, from the 'forehead of the zebra' to the 'tears of the giraffe.'
Maker / Origin
Botswanacraft, established in 1970, has worked for decades to commercialize and preserve the traditional basketry of rural Botswana, particularly supporting Bayei and Hambukushu women weavers. The tag on the floral-patterned basket proudly attributes the work to an individual artisan named Kakove, elevating this piece from a simple souvenir to a signed work of contemporary fiber art.
Condition & Value
All three baskets appear to be in excellent, clean condition with no visible broken coils, fading, or structural warping. The original paper tags are still attached, which greatly preserves their collector value. Excellent preservation of the natural vegetable dyes.
