Overview
An imposing Spanish Baroque style armchair featuring dramatic barley-twist stretchers and supports, topped with a hand-carved foliate crest rail. The frame is upholstered in a striking, natural tricolor cowhide, secured with classic brass dome tacks.
Story
Seventeenth-century Spanish design was reborn in the 1920s as global travelers fell in love with Mediterranean romance. This chair combined old-world aristocratic drama with rugged, natural materials for a bold, eclectic statement.
Maker / Origin
While the specific workshop is unmarked, this chair was produced during the height of the Mediterranean and Spanish Colonial Revival movements. Skilled regional woodworkers across Spain, Portugal, and South America specialized in recreating these historic, heavy-set styles for international export.
Condition & Value
The wooden frame shows minor scuffs and age-appropriate wear, particularly on the lower stretchers. The cowhide upholstery appears in very good condition with minimal hair loss or staining, and the brass tacks are largely intact. Excellent structural condition overall.
