Overview
This is an elegant, late Victorian electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) serving tray featuring a beautifully engraved heraldic crest of a demi-lion rampant. Manufactured by the legendary firm Elkington & Co., it bears their distinctive pseudo-hallmarks on the reverse, including the date letter 'N' within a shield, which dates its production to approximately 1898.
Story
In 1840, Birmingham inventors revolutionized the dining world by patenting commercial electroplating. This tray brought the gleaming luxury of solid silver to the aspiring Victorian middle class, complete with a custom-engraved family crest.
Maker / Origin
Elkington & Co. of Birmingham were the undisputed pioneers of electroplating, securing the original patents for the process in the 1840s. Their technological breakthrough was so significant that even elite competitors like Tiffany & Co. paid them licensing fees to use the technology. They held numerous Royal Warrants and produced some of the finest metalwork of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Condition & Value
The tray shows light surface scratching and minor pitting consistent with age and regular polishing. There is some tarnish and wear along the rim, but the silver plate appears largely intact without significant 'bleeding' of the base metal underneath. Excellent condition for its age, which helps preserve its value.
