Overview
An exquisite Edo-period Japanese painting on paper with gold leaf, depicting Heian court nobles participating in the elegant 'Winding Stream Party' poetry game. The work features a distinct gourd-shaped seal reading 'Tosa Mitsuoki' in the lower right corner, executed in the refined, classical Yamato-e style championed by the imperial court's official painters.
Story
In ancient Japan, nobles floated sake cups down garden streams, racing to compose a perfect poem before the cup drifted past. This painting captures that aristocratic game, frozen in gold leaf and mineral pigments.
Maker / Origin
Tosa Mitsuoki (1617–1691) was a monumental figure in Japanese art history who successfully reclaimed the position of Edokoro Azukari (head of the imperial painting court) for the Tosa school. He breathed new life into the traditional Yamato-e style by incorporating the delicate ink-wash techniques of Chinese Song dynasty painting, establishing a legacy of unparalleled courtly elegance.
Condition & Value
The painting is currently unmounted (makuri) and shows visible signs of age, including horizontal creasing, minor pigment loss, and localized wear to the gold leaf. There is some minor paper thinning and staining consistent with an antique scroll that was removed from its original mounting.
