Overview
A striking four-sided porcelain vase decorated in the classic Famille Verte palette, featuring narrative panels of courtly figures, scholars, and equestrian warriors. The shoulders are adorned with molded, gilded lion-mask handles holding iron-red rings, set against a dense background of floral diaper-work and butterflies.
Story
Crafted in the late Qing Dynasty or early Republic period, this vase pays homage to the golden age of Chinese porcelain. The red six-character mark on the base reads 'Great Qing Kangxi Period Make,' a common sign of respect for 17th-century imperial masterpieces.
Maker / Origin
While the mark references the Kangxi Emperor (1662–1722), this vase was produced by highly skilled, anonymous workshop artisans in Jingdezhen, the porcelain capital of China. These workshops specialized in reviving historic imperial styles to meet the insatiable demand of both domestic collectors and Western markets during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Condition & Value
The vase appears to be in good overall condition with some wear to the gilding on the lion-mask handles and minor surface dirt on the unglazed foot rim. No obvious chips, cracks, or structural repairs are visible in the photos, though the sharp corners of square vases are highly susceptible to small fleabites.
