Overview
A vibrant 10-cent commemorative stamp issued to celebrate the Mariner 10 mission, the first spacecraft to use a gravitational assist to reach another planet. It features a detailed illustration of the probe against the backdrop of Venus and Mercury.
Story
Launched in 1973, Mariner 10 was a cosmic 'slingshot' pioneer. This stamp was released in April 1974, just as the probe was beaming back the first-ever close-up photos of Mercury's cratered surface.
Maker / Origin
The Bureau of Engraving and Printing produced this using the photogravure process, a technique that allowed for the rich, layered colors seen in the planetary shadows. The design was intended to inspire a generation of Americans during the height of the Space Race's scientific expansion.
Condition & Value
The stamp appears to be in 'used' or 'hinged' condition based on the mounting. There is some visible surface dirt on the surrounding paper, but the stamp's colors remain bright. Common condition issues like these keep the value at the lower end. This is a very common commemorative stamp with millions printed.
