Overview
This is a charming, hand-painted majolica-style ceramic pitcher custom-made in Spain for the legendary 'Tio Pepe' Spanish restaurant in Baltimore, Maryland. Featuring traditional Iberian blue-and-white folk motifs with vibrant red and green accents, it served as both a functional table vessel for sangria and a beloved souvenir of a landmark dining institution.
Story
Opened in 1968, Baltimore's Tio Pepe became a legendary subterranean sanctuary for authentic Spanish dining. This pitcher was custom-ordered directly from Spain to serve their famous sangria, bringing a piece of authentic Iberian craftsmanship straight to Maryland tables.
Maker / Origin
While the specific pottery workshop in Spain is unidentified beyond the artist's initials 'CHC' on the base, it was crafted in one of Spain's historic ceramic regions—likely Toledo or Talavera de la Reina. These regions are world-renowned for preserving Renaissance-era tin-glazed earthenware traditions.
Condition & Value
The pitcher is in very good vintage condition with no visible cracks or major chips. There is minor shelf wear and typical glaze pinholes on the underside of the base, which are characteristic of hand-fired majolica. Excellent preservation of the hand-painted lettering and colorful motifs.
