Overview
A striking hand-blown amethyst glass decanter set featuring four matching cordial glasses, all adorned with hand-painted 24k gold floral motifs. The deep purple glass is so saturated it appears nearly black until held to the light, a hallmark of high-quality Bohemian manganese-tinted glass.
Story
Bohemian glassmakers in the 1920s were the world's undisputed masters of color. This set was likely a prized 'Sunday Best' service, designed to catch the flickering candlelight of a pre-war European dining room. The deep amethyst hue was achieved using rare metal oxides.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned, this set originates from the legendary Jablonec or Nový Bor regions of Bohemia. These glassworks survived empires and wars, specializing in 'Egermann' style techniques where glass was stained or layered and then intricately decorated by hand with precious metals.
Condition & Value
The gold appears remarkably intact, though there is minor 'flea-biting' or wear consistent with age on the base of the glasses. The decanter's stopper appears original, which is a significant value-add. Some rubbing on the gilt rims reduces value slightly.
