Story

Arita potteries in Kyushu perfected the art of cobalt blue underglaze back in the early 17th century. Large chargers like this served as dramatic centerpieces for celebratory banquets and elite domestic displays. The butterfly soaring above chrysanthemums carries deep Japanese symbolism of longevity and graceful transformation.

Maker / Origin

The square 'Kakuryū' mark indicates production by a specialized Arita-region porcelain workshop producing high-grade underglaze blue wares. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Master Arita artisans refined cobalt brushwork to create painterly wash techniques known as 'dami', blending fine line details with soft tonal shading.

Condition & Value

Appears in good vintage condition with vibrant cobalt underglaze colors and crisp glaze clarity. Minor kiln spots and wear on the unglazed foot ring consistent with age; check rim carefully under close inspection for tiny fleabites or hairlines. Large (40cm+) Japanese sometsuke chargers are sought after by collectors for display.
