Overview
A charming trio of penguin figurines featuring two hand-formed Swedish-style art glass penguins with frosted bellies and a tiny hand-carved green aventurine quartz penguin companion. The larger glass penguin stands protectively over an integrated frosted chick, while the smaller glass penguin captures a playful, waddling posture.
Story
Scandinavian glassmakers in the mid-20th century became obsessed with capturing the icy, light-bending qualities of the Arctic. These stylized penguins were designed to play with light, using frosted bellies to mimic soft feathers against polished, ice-like glass.
Maker / Origin
While unsigned, the glass penguins are highly characteristic of Swedish glasshouses like FM Konstglas (founded by the Marcolin brothers in Ronneby) or Mats Jonasson of Målerås. These studios revolutionized mid-century animal sculptures by combining clear, flowing lead crystal with frosted, textured surfaces to create depth.
Condition & Value
All three figurines appear to be in excellent vintage condition with no visible chips, cracks, or heavy scratching on the polished surfaces. The frosted areas remain clean and uniform. Excellent condition helps preserve their modest decorative value.
