Overview
This is a hand-carved soapstone vase designed to replicate the look of ancient Chinese ritual bronzes and jades. It features incised bands of stylized archaic dragons (chi long) and geometric chrysanthemum medallions, finished with an artificial patination to simulate centuries of burial.
Story
Created in the late 20th century, this vase pays homage to China's ancient Han Dynasty. Artisans used local soapstone to recreate the coveted look of excavated tomb jades, complete with simulated calcification and iron-rich earth staining.
Maker / Origin
While bearing an incised seal mark on the underside, this piece was produced in a regional Chinese carving workshop specializing in decorative lapidary arts. These workshops kept centuries-old carving traditions alive, catering to a global fascination with China's archaeological golden age.
Condition & Value
The vase shows intentional distressing, artificial calcification, and simulated wear to mimic age. There are minor natural scuffs and tiny fleabites along the rim and foot rim, which are typical for soft soapstone. This weathered appearance is integral to its design and does not negatively impact its decorative value.
