This is a boxed two-piece set of Chinese reverse inside-painted (Neihua) glass snuff bottles depicting figures from the legendary Four Great Beauties of ancient China, including Wang Zhaojun and Xi Shi. The bottles come housed in their original silk brocade-covered presentation box with a printed label reading 'Picture of Four Beauties'.
Story
Artists use a curved bamboo micro-brush to paint entire scenes entirely in reverse through a tiny bottle neck. This craft originated in the Qing court as a way to turn tobacco vessels into handheld galleries.
Maker / Origin
While originating as an elite master art form in Beijing and Hebei during the late Qing Dynasty, sets like this were produced in specialized folk art workshops and export cooperatives throughout the late 20th century to showcase traditional Chinese cultural lore.
Condition & Value
Both glass snuff bottles appear intact with vibrant interior painting and intact stoppers. The fabric-lined presentation box shows minor edge wear and slight toning consistent with vintage storage. Excellent presentation condition.
