Overview
This is a classic mid-century American portable mechanic's toolbox featuring a gray wrinkle-finish exterior, two drawers in iconic Craftsman red, and a top cantilevered tray. It retains its original lock, keys, and the distinctive crown-logo 'Craftsman' cast metal badge on the bottom drawer.
Story
In January 1964, this heavy-duty steel box rolled off an American assembly line just as the suburban DIY boom was reshaping the nation. It was designed to be a portable fortress for a homeowner's most prized hand tools. Finding one today with its original matching keys still intact is an incredibly rare treat.
Maker / Origin
Sears introduced the Craftsman brand name in 1927, purchasing the rights for just $500. Under the leadership of Arthur Barrows, the brand became synonymous with durable, professional-grade tools backed by an famous lifetime warranty. These mid-century boxes were manufactured for Sears by specialized American steel fabricators like Waterloo Industries.
Condition & Value
The toolbox shows honest wear consistent with garage use, including surface rust, paint loss, and minor pitting on the top lid and latches. The red drawer fronts and interior compartments are in very good condition with minimal paint loss.
