Overview
An exceptional Japanese porcelain plate featuring a central underglaze blue (sometsuke) depiction of a mythical Kirin leaping through a sky of relief-carved (yokoku) swirling clouds. The iron-red rim (kuchibeni) frames a masterfully balanced composition that showcases the technical heights of Edo-period Arita porcelain production.
Story
During the Edo period, Japanese potters in Arita revolutionized porcelain by blending Chinese mythical motifs with a distinctly Japanese sense of space. This plate features the Kirin, a legendary beast whose arrival signaled the birth of a benevolent ruler.
Maker / Origin
While the specific workshop remains anonymous, this plate was produced in the famed Arita region, the birthplace of Japanese porcelain. During the middle Edo period, these kilns transitioned from copying Chinese Ming dynasty styles to perfecting their own refined, high-firing techniques under the patronage of the Nabeshima clan and wealthy merchant classes.
Condition & Value
The plate appears to be in excellent antique condition with no visible cracks, major chips, or restoration. There are minor firing flaws (pinholes and tiny iron spots) consistent with Edo-period kiln conditions, and light wear to the iron-red rim. Excellent condition for this age commands a premium.
