Story

In post-war Italy, artisans in Sorrento revived centuries-old wood inlay techniques to create highly decorative furniture for a booming export market. These mobile carts brought theatrical flair to mid-century living rooms, turning the simple act of serving tea or cocktails into a grand, choreographed performance.

Maker / Origin

While often unsigned, these carts were produced by skilled woodworkers in the Campania region of Italy, particularly around Sorrento. This area has been world-renowned since the 19th century for 'intarsia' (marquetry), where tiny, hand-cut pieces of differently colored woods are pieced together like a puzzle to create intricate floral designs.

Condition & Value

The cart appears to be in good vintage condition with beautiful color retention on the wood. There is some minor wear consistent with age on the lower shelf and legs, but the critical inlay work on the drop leaves looks intact. Excellent preservation of the inlay and working wheels will command the top of the price range.
