The exterior depicts a dynamic karashishi (mythical guardian lion) among stylized clouds and blossoming peonies (botan), bordered inside the rim with a geometric diaper band.

In 1830s Japan, dining culture flourished in Edo's bustling noodle shops. This spirited dipping cup brought playful talismanic protection right to the patron's table through its ferocious lion and blooming peonies.
Maker / Origin
Produced by skilled artisans in the prolific Arita kiln region of Hizen Province. By the Tenpo era, Arita potters had mastered high-volume, exceptionally expressive underglaze painting designed for daily dining and teahouse culture.
