Overview

This striking porcelain vase features a vibrant coral-red ground decorated with mythical beasts, including a green qilin and a blue dragon, rendered in relief-like enamels. The neck is finished in a contrasting turquoise-blue ground with delicate floral sprays, flanked by gilded stylized dragon handles.

Story

Created in the late Qing dynasty or Republic period, this vase pays homage to imperial designs of the 18th century. The four mythical beasts painted on its sides represent cosmic harmony, protection, and prosperity for the household.

Maker / Origin

While bearing a blue underglaze Qianlong seal mark on the base, this vase was crafted by skilled artisans in Jingdezhen long after the Qianlong Emperor's reign. These later workshops specialized in reviving the complex, multi-colored enamel techniques of the imperial golden age to meet global demand.

Condition & Value

There are several prominent chips along the scalloped top rim of the vase, exposing the white porcelain body beneath the blue glaze. There is also visible rubbing and wear to the gold gilding on both decorative handles. The damage to the rim reduces the overall value by approximately 50-60%.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
