Overview

This is a seminal piece of 1980s pop culture history, representing the very first storybook appearance of the iconic Strawberry Shortcake character. Unlike later mass-market versions, this edition features the soft, whimsical watercolor illustrations of Mercedes Llimona, which gave the character her original 'rag doll' charm.

Story

In 1977, a greeting card artist created a girl in a bonnet. By 1980, she became a global phenomenon. This book was the first time children could read her adventures, launching a multi-billion dollar empire of toys and scent.

Maker / Origin

While the character was designed by Muriel Fahrion for American Greetings, this book was brought to life by illustrator Mercedes Llimona. Llimona was a celebrated Spanish artist known for her delicate, soulful depictions of children, which helped ground the commercial character in a classic storybook aesthetic.

Condition & Value

The cover shows visible edge wear, some creasing on the spine, and minor surface scuffing. The absence of the dust jacket and the visible wear to the board corners reduces the value by approximately 50% compared to a mint-in-jacket copy. Value is driven by the 1980 first edition status and the presence of the dust jacket.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
