Overview
This is an original Japanese woodblock print diptych (two joined oban sheets) titled 'Furyu Iki-ningyo' (Fashionable Living Dolls) by the celebrated master Utagawa Kuniyoshi. It depicts a dramatic warrior tableau inspired by the hyper-realistic iki-ningyo life-sized doll spectacles that captivated Edo audiences in the 1850s.
Story
In 1856 Edo, life-sized 'living dolls' became a wild public obsession. Kuniyoshi seized the craze, rendering samurai and startled onlookers with dramatic theatricality and unmistakable woodblock vigor.
Maker / Origin
Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798–1861) was one of the greatest innovators of late Edo-period ukiyo-e, renowned for his dynamic warrior prints (musha-e), mythical beasts, and satirical wit. His work heavily influenced modern Japanese manga and tattoo culture.
Condition & Value
Vertical center folds present on both sheets; colors show good retention with expected light paper toning, minor edge creasing, and bleed-through visible on reverse. Unbacked condition is highly desirable to collectors and preserves authentic margins.
