Overview

This is a beautifully constructed folk art vessel made from a hollowed natural coconut shell, tightly encased in a fine, hand-braided plant fiber weave with decorative dyed red accents. It features a woven braided strap threaded directly through the shell, creating a functional hanging canteen or small container.

Story

Crafted in tropical coastal regions, vessels like this transformed everyday natural coconut shells into durable, portable water or seed canteens using intricate plaiting techniques.

Maker / Origin

While unsigned, this vessel reflects indigenous weaving traditions passed down through generations across maritime Asia and the Pacific. Artisans used locally harvested palm fronds or pandanus leaves, splitting them into fine strands to weave protective coats around fragile or porous gourds and shells.

Condition & Value

In remarkably clean vintage condition. The woven fiber outer layer remains tight and bright with no major losses or unraveling, and the dyed red geometric stitching is intact. The interior natural coconut shell shows mild age-related surface darkening. Excellent preservation overall.

Market Analysis

Comparable demand stays strongest where maker, originality, and venue confidence line up. Broader examples still trade, but the range tightens quickly when provenance, condition, or selling lane fit is missing.

Value Drivers

  • Strong maker attribution with credible period details
  • Better-than-average condition for the category
  • Broader demand rises when presentation and finish feel intact

Concerns

  • Decorative-only demand limits the ceiling
  • Surface wear or missing provenance can compress the range fast
  • Regional sale lanes often underperform specialist venues
