Overview
This charming vitro-porcelain tile features a whimsical winter village scene in the 'Naïve' folk art style. It is part of the celebrated 'Design Naif' collection, which translated the colorful, idyllic world of French artist Gérard Laplau onto fine ceramics.
Story
In 1979, Villeroy & Boch executives saw a UNICEF Christmas card designed by Gérard Laplau and were so enchanted they commissioned an entire dinnerware line. This 'Winter' scene captures the quiet magic of a snow-covered village at night.
Maker / Origin
Gérard Laplau (1938–2009) was a self-taught French artist and a leading figure in the Naïve art movement, known for his 'childlike' perspective. His collaboration with Villeroy & Boch, a company dating back to 1748, turned his folk paintings into a global design icon.
Condition & Value
The front illustration appears vibrant and well-preserved. The reverse shows some staining and adhesive residue, which is common if the tile was previously mounted or used as a trivet. These marks do not significantly impact the display value.
