Overview
A magnificent large Japanese porcelain charger (ozara) measuring 36.5 cm in diameter, painted in rich underglaze cobalt blue (sometsuke) with a dynamic tiger among windswept bamboo. The underside displays classic karakusa scrolls and authentic spur marks (harime) from high-temperature kiln firing.
Story
Japanese potters rarely saw living tigers, painting them from imported pelts and Chinese scrolls. This charmingly expressive beast sheltered in bamboo symbolized immense courage, protection, and the unyielding spirit of the samurai.
Maker / Origin
Produced by the master porcelain painters of the Arita kilns in Hizen Province. These kilns were pioneers of Japanese porcelain after kaolin clay was discovered in the Izumiyama quarry in the early 17th century, supplying both the domestic elite and global courts.
Condition & Value
Visually presents very well with strong cobalt pigment and intact glaze. Appears structurally sound with expected kiln spur marks and minor foot rim wear consistent with age, accompanied by a traditional fitted paulownia box (kiribako). Any unseen hairline cracks would moderate value by 30-50%.
